You Are What You Eat: Emotional Diets Count Too

Jason Barrett Lacks Empathy

I was thinking about the phrase “you are what you eat” today and it kind of hit me in a different way than it may have originally been intended.  I looked at it from an emotional standpoint.  What are you consuming emotionally, and purposefully, that affects your outward appearance?

We humans have a tendency to feed ourselves a fresh diet of the things we love and that includes emotional food.  Some of us like to laugh, so we watch comedies, tell jokes, and surround ourselves with funny people.  Some of us like to cry, so movies, books, and stories on Facebook do the trick.  We collect and consume the things we find the most interesting and many times there is a real consistency to what it is we find interesting.

My Shortcomings

I have been called cold and calloused on several occasions.  Heck, I was just called that again less than an hour ago.  What is it that makes me “cold”?  Quite frankly, I feel like there are people who identify, or find their identity in, the things they consume. The emotional battles they fight on a daily basis are tough for me to take, because I feel like they go looking for the fodder.  It seems like the emotions, and their related response, are manufactured and far from pure.  I know how that sounds.  I can see the words as they hit the screen.  Not good.

I am aware that is not always the case.  There are times things just seem to pile up, but in quite a few cases there are people who are a bit dramatic.  Don’t you think?  And that’s where the cold comes seeping in for Ol’ JB.  I have to cut away the manufactured drama to get to the real heart of the matter.  Nine times out of ten, upon further review, it turns out the drama won the day.  Simplifying my life, I just apply that reasoning to most all situations and move forward.  Sorry world.  I’m just that way.

Good People Really Do Exist

There are fantastic people in this world and you see them every day.  They give to others.  They truly love others.  They do not look for accolades.  They do all of it quietly and with a good heart.  They are the true saints in the world and God bless them for what they do.  It is hard not to recognize them when you see them.

I am going to close by leaving us with the good thoughts of the good people that are out there.  To those of you who are trying, keep trying.  You can rest easy knowing that my judgement means absolutely nothing and someday I will be judged as I have judged.  That will be quite the site I’m sure.
