How I Start Writing

Start Writing

This is how I start writing.  I literally start typing words and will type what comes to my head until I start to have something worthwhile to say.

I can go on like this for hours.

What do you do to start typing?

Can you start with a question like this one?

Do I enjoy writing?

Yes.  The problem with the above question is that it is not open-ended.  There is one answer and that does it.  I need something more.

What do I like about writing?

I like that I have the freedom to put whatever I want down on “paper”.  I like that I can literally say anything.  I like that my work is unique and I like that it may help other people.  I like to think some of what I write is useful.  I like to think some of it is entertaining and maybe even funny.

Why do most people fail to write?

They struggle with the vaunted “writer’s block”.  The only thing blocking them from writing is themselves.  They are too scared to put one word on paper or on the screen.  Some say they can’t think of anything.  Some say they don’t want the ridicule.  Those two issues are solved indepently from each other,  but you get the idea.

Just so you know, I have not removed anything from this stream-of-conscious exercise.  There has been no editing.  All of what I am typing is staying in the document.

Have I said anything worth reading?

Probably.

Will people argue that answer?

Absolutely.  I have seen people argue things as rock solid as black and white.  There are some that will even talk you into believing something like your own name is wrong or what you had for lunch is something completely different.

Do you see why there is a need for editing?

I am nearly certain that has become glaringly obvious.

Do you see how this can work for you though?

I hope so.  It’s really not that tough.  Your mind goes and goes and goes.  You just have to trap some of those thoughts and get them down on paper.  There’s no wrong answer and there’s no wrong outcome.

Just sit down and write.  I just did.
